Big Drum Social - Sharing our Traditions

Big Drum Social – Sharing Our Traditions

Sharing Our Traditions is the second of three big drum social gatherings planned for this year.  This Big Drum Social will be held on Saturday, February 4th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. University of Ontario Institute of Technology will be hosting the event on the second floor of its Downtown Campus located at 61 Charles Street (adjacent to the GM Centre on Athol Street). Admission to the afternoon event is free.

Similar to the first gathering held at YWCA on October 22, Sharing Our Traditions will feature the big drum from Native Canadian Centre in Toronto (NCCT).  The big drum provided by Dedicated Native Awareness singers (DNA) from Peterborough has also been invited. The Métis Women’s Hand Drum group, All Our Relations will be returning and Elder Cliff Standingready will be providing Opening Ceremony.  Elder Joseph Paquette and Kim Wheatley will share stories as is the tradition during the winter months. The afternoon will also include activities for youth, health and wellness information for families and traditional foods to help keep you warm.

During the Big Drum social, people of Aboriginal ancestry or with children of Aboriginal ancestry are invited to participate in the Health and Wellness Needs Assessment Survey for Aboriginal Peoples.  Draw prizes will be available for participants.

Please mark your calendars as well for Saturday, April 14th. Oshawa Community Health Centre will be hosting the second annual Aboriginal Social Gathering, the third social in the gathering series. We hope to see you at these upcoming events.
